Service Height Rule

30 Jun by Isabel Barros

As I was watching this years All England open I noticed most players were serving the shuttle above their waist. To my surprise, I found out the rule was changed in 2018!
See more details below.

Old Rule (Pre-2018):
The shuttle had to be struck below the waist.

New Rule (Post-2018):
The BWF (Badminton World Federation) introduced a fixed height service rule:
The shuttle must be struck below 1.15 metres (115 cm) from the surface of the court at the moment of contact.

Current Status (as of 2025):
The 1.15m fixed height rule is now the standard in professional and international play.
In amateur or local play, some competitions might still use the older interpretation or apply relaxed enforcement.

I suggest you measure yourself to learn where the limit os 1.15m is, to me it is just under my breast.

To recap this is a summary of the 5 serving rules in badminton for both doubles and singles:

- Both feet must be in contact with the floor when striking the shuttle. - Your feet must not be touching any of the court lines. - You must strike the cork, not the feather. - The whole shuttle must be struck below 1.15m. - The serve must be delivered in a forward continuous motion.
